The Books That Are Like Pancakes: A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas

To the reader who has successfully avoided reading the books that are almost everywhere, I applaud you on your stalwart resistance.

But I’m here to tell you, it’s okay to have a little fun.

Even this Unsanctioned Book Influencer recognized that the “sexy fairy” books are ubiquitous and gave them a try. And like a fluffy stack of flapjacks, I couldn’t have just one bite.

This is the series that knows what it is, knows what you want, and wants to give you more.

What It Tastes Like

If you like “maple syrup” on your pancakes (ahem!), you shall have it. But maybe on occasion, you could go for some “whipped cream.” Say no more. Sarah J. Maas will give you whipped cream, chocolate chips, blueberries, pecans, strawberries AND nutella–as long as you want to eat…pancakes.

The good news is that pancakes are beloved and you’ll find many a fellow pancake lover, but for the reader who might want “waffles”, well, you’ll just have to try her Crescent City series. But if you’re looking for oatmeal, you’re looking in the wrong place.

Putting the fork down for a minute, Maas’s series do have more going for them than…pancakes.

You might find yourself delighted by a band of misfits on a quest, or compelled by the high stakes of war, or intrigued by loose fairytale adaptations. If you’re in the mood for heavy plotting, occasional humor, and an amusing cast of characters, these books will satisfy.

What It Sounds Like

Sonically, given the deep satisfaction you’ll feel and the broad appeal these books have, I would say these books are like listening to ABBA.

And that comparison is drawn with deep respect for both the author and the musical group.

These Books Might Be Your Next Series If:

  • You’re looking for fast pacing.
  • You’re looking for a nice blend of familiar elements and plot twists.
  • You find flying sexy.
  • You want to know what it would be like to actually have a conversation with someone silently, instead of just telling them things “with your eyes”
  • You’re looking for action (or action).
